Why do a dual degree in biblical and theological studies at Northwestern?

You will complete advanced courses in theological methods and biblical interpretation. To aid in your study of Scripture, you will also complete two years of New Testament Greek and one year of Biblical Hebrew and carefully study the socio-historical setting of the Bible.

You may write an optional thesis guided by a faculty mentor that contributes to one of three fields of study: Old Testament Studies, New Testament Studies, or Theological Studies. You will improve your skills in research, critical thinking, project management, and writing. This preparation is especially helpful for students who are considering doctoral studies.

Learn from internationally recognized faculty in the Department of Biblical and Theological Studies who have expertise in the Old and New Testaments, theology, archaeology, biblical interpretation, and the Dead Sea Scrolls. Be equipped with transferable job skills valued by many employers such as analysis, research, communication, and critical thinking.

You can study abroad in Israel, be inducted into the national honor society Theta Alpha Kappa, present work to peers from neighboring Christian institutions, participate in an archaeological excavation in Israel, volunteer for service projects with Biblical and Theological Studies faculty, and get involved in local ministry. Our theology students have been recognized by Zondervan Publishing House and received awards at our yearly Honors Convocation chapel to recognize their outstanding achievement in the study of biblical Greek, biblical Hebrew, and theology.

Northwestern is recognized as one of the best places to study the Bible in Minnesota and the nation. Our history includes ministers, evangelists, and missionaries like Billy Graham and Roger Youderian and many alumni who serve God in their careers.

If you have a passion to study the Bible, want to understand important theological issues, and desire to have a career with significance, this might be the right degree for you.

What will you learn?

You will learn to perform advanced biblical interpretation, evaluate current issues using theological methods, explain Christian theology, and develop your skills in communication, research, and analysis.

Some classes include:

  • Elementary and Intermediate Greek
  • Biblical Theology
  • Second Temple Judaism
  • Ethics
  • Contemporary Issues in Theology
