Why study Ministry at Northwestern?

Northwestern has been training the next generation of church leaders, missionaries, nonprofit leaders, and other ministers for over 100 years. Our online ministry curriculum was developed by faculty with years of practical ministry experience.

If you have a heart to serve the Lord through serving others, this might be the right degree for you. Through this major, you will grow spiritually and develop skills in teaching, counseling, and leadership so that you can make an impact in a broken world that needs the hope of Christ. With the embedded Christian Studies concentration, you will establish a foundational understanding of the Bible, theology, and apologetics.

Throughout the program, you will be encouraged to focus on your specific areas of interest and calling, and explore ways in which you can immediately apply coursework to your current ministry or job. Ministry practicums related to your area of interest are also embedded into this major.

This degree is available completely online with optional live virtual meetings built into major-specific courses.

What will you learn?

With this degree, you will gain a deeper understanding of God and God’s calling on their life, acquire a growing knowledge of how identity in Christ and self-knowledge impact self and ministry, learn to integrate theology and theory to minister effectively in a globalized world, and be ready to develop, design, and implement Christian ministry in various ministry contexts.

Some classes include:

  • Christian Formation for Ministry Practice
  • Biblical Interpretation for Study
  • Ministry in a Globalized World
  • Care and Counseling in Ministry
  • Leadership in Ministry

Future Educational Path

Students may apply to combine an undergraduate degree in Ministry with an accelerated Master of Arts in Ministry Leadership. With this option, Ministry majors complete up to 16 credits of the MA degree during their undergraduate program and complete the remaining 20 credits during a fifth year of study. The fifth year can be completed on campus or through online learning.

Students who choose to participate in the accelerated MA in Ministry Leadership program save time and money while adding a graduate degree to their portfolio.

Northwestern has a really good mission and purpose to educate us in the ways of God, but also offers education that focuses on the profession you are going into, whether that's ministries or communications or business. We have an opportunity and a platform to preach Jesus through our lives.
